One of the most common questions I get from my curl friends is how to create a polished look. People who don’t have the curl don’t understand. They marvel at the spring and bounce. To us, we look in the mirror at our curls every day- and it can become boring! Sometimes we just want to dress things up! So, my first word of wisdom to pass along is: “don’t be afraid to pick up a curling iron” . For many people- this is a concept they have never considered. Here are some tips which can help you along the way!
#1 Resist the temptation to curl your entire head. This is about refining what you already have- not reinventing the wheel. Focus your energy on bits that lack consistency in curl pattern or areas that lack curl definition. Ya know, the little fuzzy pieces.
#2 Make sure that the hair is absolutley 100% dry. The last thing you want to do is damage your hair and cause breakage.
Breakage is especially bad for curly hair- because it interferes with a defined curl pattern. Curls are social entities- they like to hang out with one-another. Breakage causes variance in length which is not curl friendly.
#3 Take the time to prepare your hair For successful and safe styling, be sure to include a thermal protectant and a holding agent (gel, mousse) into your regimen. Most of my styling is pretty spontaneous, so I just incorporate a thermal protectant into my product line up with every wash- so that the protection is there in the event that I do use a hot tool.
#4 Select sections that are a similar size to the defined curl you are mimicking. This will allow for the most natural look. By holding the iron vertically, you can create the curl where it will eventually live.
#5 If you have questions- don’t be afraid to ask the advise of a professional. Your stylist can assist you in choosing products specifically designed to meet your hair’s needs.
